How to Own Your Day Every Day

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

Owning the day means giving yourself the authority to take charge of the day. This includes having the power to influence how you act, react, and interact in all situations. It can also mean that you go about your day doing things that make you happy.
People say that the first task that you do after waking up must be the most important task of the day. Can you ask yourself and tell what that first task is for you? I hope it’s not checking your notifications. I hope it’s not snoozing the alarm for the third time.
Quick question: What brings you here? Why did you feel the need to read about how to own your day?
I am guessing that you might be in any of the following situations below:
You have been feeling like you’re just dragging yourself through the work week.
You want to try building a good habit of living mindfully each day.
You are tired of working hard for someone else’s dream.
It could be those three or not but whatever it may be, read on!
The good news is that, “HERE is where you are and here is where you will START.” To start owning your day, you start by starting. That was a little bit irritating to write but we all know that there’s a truth in that. We all just have to really start making things happen.
Let’s start, shall we?
Start where you are
Through the years, I have always told myself that any day now I can be the person I dream of myself to become. Little did I know that having that mindset slowly kills my own happiness in the present. It’s because I kept looking forward to the day I become. And set aside where I am right now. I forgot that I have my right now.
Perceive. To own your day, you start by being aware. Assess your situation. Where are you right now? How are you doing spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially, or physically? Most of us easily forget that the only person who could help us out of a bad situation, help us go through a situation, and help us get to a better situation is ourselves.
Ponder. To own your day, you start by asking yourself what you want. Pause for a moment and be alone with your thoughts. If you tend to overthink and start thinking negatively of yourself, don’t get stuck there. Instead, just think about what will make you happy today. What is that one thing that you want to do today? Start there.
Plan out. To own your day, you start by creating a plan. If you are a freak like me, create a master plan. Kidding aside, planning should be your best friend. Sometimes, not knowing what your goals are and not having any direction for your day will just make you a slave of any task that comes your way. Conclusion, you end your day feeling like you lost precious time. Tip! Before you go to bed, write down what you need to do tomorrow.
Start your day with Affirmations
You have probably seen a couple of movie scenes where the main character gets up from her bed, goes straight to the bathroom, looks in the mirror, and starts talking good about herself. Notice how that simple task of telling positive and nice things lifts up one’s mood.

Never underestimate the power of positive self-talk. Saying your affirmations is a good exercise for your mental health. To own your day, you must take charge of your idea of yourself and start manifesting the things you want to come your way.
“It's the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” - Muhammad Ali
In case you feel a little puffy today, take a good look at yourself in the mirror and say your affirmations. Do yourself a favor and please be nice to yourself.
Here are some positive affirmations that you can start with:
I am blessed. I have a lot of things to be grateful for.
I am talented. I got skills that I can use to start working on my goals.
I am beautiful, smart, and kind. I love myself and I will take care of myself today.
Start your day with Intentions
I know how hard it is to learn how to start the day for yourself. This mindset dragged me daily and I hated it so much. Stop ruminating and let go of that lie. You don’t have to be a slave to that type of mindset too.
I started helping myself by thinking and believing that I can totally prioritize my personal cares first thing in the morning. You have the power to influence your day filled with intentions. And I am not just talking about to-do-list’s and errands - and call it a purposeful day. No! It’s more of a day-to-day discipline of doing things that really matter to you.
This may sound a little extra because it will require you to be extra responsible, extra disciplined, or extra active in your day. No one says that owning your day won’t require you to give extra effort. But if you do it repeatedly, it won’t be long until you realize that extra becomes your every day.
As an encouragement to start living intentionally, let me share with you a talk that powerfully resonated with me through the years. In this Ted Talk video entitled How to stop screwing yourself over by Mel Robbins, I have learned this idea that forever changed my mindset:
“What's interesting about being an adult, is that when you become eighteen, nobody tells you that it's now going to be your job to parent yourself. And by "parent yourself", I mean it's your job to make yourself do the crap you don't want to do, so you can be everything that you're supposed to be. And you're so damn busy waiting to feel like it. And you're never going to!” - Mel Robbins

Whatever your reasons may be - your purpose, your goals, or your responsibilities, that led you to be in the situation that you are in at the moment, it was intended to happen. Same goes with however you want to start your day, you can do so if you train yourself to live by your intentions, by your own expectations, and with your own direction.
To own your day, know your intentions and stick with it. The start is easy. Continuing what you started is the challenge. You want to own your day every day, right? Start every day. Build the habit.
